As intersectionality becomes a sticking point for scholarly inquiry, it behooves us to evaluate how intersectional thinking can inform and sometimes efface particular identity markers. This talk—which centers open discussion and debate among all participants—considers the uphill battle of thinking the intersections among queerness, race, and Asian Americanness. By considering several case studies—discriminatory slogans that circulate on queer social media, increasing Asian American hate crimes in light of COVID-19, poetry by Chen Chen, and the celebritydom of George Takei—we will explore the fraught tensions among intersectional identities and how they are received within an American cultural context that invariably bleeds globally.

Jeremy Chow is an assistant Professor of English at Bucknell University, which occupies the ancestral and unceded territories of the Susquehannock peoples. His research explores the relationships among literary studies, theories of queerness, and the environmental humanities. His first book, The Queerness of Water: Violent Entanglements in Troubled Ecologiesis forthcoming from University of Virginia Press.
